To celebrate Spirit of Tasmania as the official Travel Partner for Dark Mofo 2018, three road trip itineraries from Devonport to Hobart have been created for those with an adventurous heart.
And, we are giving one road trip experience away for the weekend 13 – 24 June.
Experience a dark night at sea before exploring, foraging and winding your way through Tasmania's dramatic scenery down to Hobart for Dark Mofo 2018.
Exit Devonport and wind your way through Tassie’s iconic wilderness, featuring the world-renowned Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and the Tarkine. Stock up on whisky and cider near Devonport, and then venture west. Stay overnight at the Cradle Mountain Lodge before winding your way through mining towns and arriving at scenic Strahan—coastal gateway to the Franklin and Gordon rivers. Explore Queenstown—epicentre of the wild west—and treat yourself to a luxurious stay at Pumphouse Point on Lake St Clair. Then onwards to Hobart.
From Devonport, drive south east along the Bass Highway to Launceston, then south down the Midland Highway through the heart of Tasmania. Think colonial-era towns such as Campbell Town, stunning scenery such as the beautiful Cataract Gorge in Launceston, and pastoral vistas as far as the eye can see. There’s food and drink aplenty, too—a berry farm, a food and wine conservatory, craft beer, whisky distilleries and more. Allow one day.
Head east for wine, beaches, rainforests and more natural beauty than you can poke a stick at. Go south from Devonport (stopping off for cheese, berries and fine plonk), then hightail it through the Fingal Valley to Tassie’s stunning east coast. Take in the iconic scenery of the Freycinet National Park and Maria Island, and make a detour down the Tasman Peninsula (stopping in at Port Arthur), before turning towards the southern capital. Allow at least a full day, or make the most of it and spend a night or two on the coast.
